Value of ICT Education in School Curriculum

Information and Communications Technology has become an integral and accepted part of everyday life for many people. Technology is increasing in importance in people’s lives and it is expected that this trend will continue, to the extent that technological literacy will become a functional requirement for people’s work, social, and personal lives.

The creative use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in education has the capacity to increase the quality of people’s lives by enhancing teaching and learning. Since the launch of the Primary School Curriculum in 1999 there have been significant developments in the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in education. Support for the use of ICT by the Department of Education and Science has resulted in increased availability of ICT in schools, as well as increased opportunities for teacher professional development regarding the use of ICT for teaching and learning.

In this context, individual teachers have exploited the potential of ICT to complement their own pedagogical practices, and to extend their children’s learning. The Primary School Curriculum promotes the use of ICT to enhance teaching and learning across the curriculum.
